Strengthening Our Suicide Intervention Skills at Polaris Counselling Hub

At Polaris Counselling Hub, we believe that learning never stops. Recently, the Polaris team, Ethan, Gordon, Miles and Zoe, completed two intensive days of ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training). We are grateful to LivingWorks Global, Public Health Scotland, and Petrofac Group for making this training possible.

While all of us are trained counsellors and already work with suicide awareness as part of our professional training, we see continued development as essential. Suicide prevention is not an area where you ever “finish” learning. This training allowed us to deepen our skills, reflect on our practice, and strengthen our confidence in having some of the most difficult conversations a person can face.

Why ASIST Training Matters

ASIST is designed for everyone, not just mental health professionals. One of the most valuable aspects of the training is the PAL model of suicide intervention, a clear and compassionate framework that supports people to recognise risk, engage openly, and help someone stay safe for now.

Many people are not trained to talk about suicide. Even saying the word can feel uncomfortable or frightening. Yet most of us will encounter someone in our lives who is struggling. This could be a friend, a family member, a colleague, or even a stranger. Without the right tools, people often worry about saying the wrong thing or making the situation worse.

ASIST helps remove that fear by offering structure, clarity, and humanity. It supports people to focus on connection rather than perfection, and on listening rather than fixing. The training also highlights areas many people have never considered, helping build awareness, confidence, and compassion.

Our Commitment at Polaris Counselling Hub

At Polaris Counselling Hub, we are here for anyone experiencing thoughts of suicide. You never have to carry these thoughts alone. One of our counsellors will be there to listen, without judgement, at your pace.

We also recognise that counselling is not always accessible to everyone. Alongside our own services, we are committed to signposting to free and 24 hour support options. We will be sharing details of helplines and additional services on our website and social channels so that support is always easy to find when it is needed most.

Reaching Out Can Save Lives

Suicide is not an easy topic, but it is an important one. Learning how to have these conversations safely and compassionately can make a real difference. If you or someone you know is struggling, please reach out for support.

Help is available and you do not have to face this alone.

With care,
Team Polaris
